Avaaz Global Political Activism
Avaaz a US civic organization that was launched in 2007 with a focus on global activism and issues of climate change, human rights, and all rights, corruption, poverty, and conflict. It is considered one of the world’s largest online activist networks. It was founded by a community of public sector professionals which were trying to promote good governance civic virtue and democracy.Their founding president and CEO is Ricken Patel a Canadian British graduate from Oxford University where he a degree in political philosophy and economics. He went on to receive a Masters in Public policy from Harvard University and has since worked for the international crisis group in various areas around the globe.
It was there that he has been said to have learned how to bring forces to the negotiation table, restore faith from the public in political systems and how to spot when manipulation by foreign forces is occurring. After these experiences, he returned to the US where he learned how to use the Internet as a tool for activism. One of the things that set Avaaz apart from other organizations is that it does not accept donations foundations or corporations and it also does not accept donations of greater than $5000. This has made the company rely on the generosity of individual members and over the company’s life it has raised over $20 million.
Avaaz hopes to unite political idealist from around the world with no set ideology it is their mission to unite people around the world regardless of political philosophy. However, they do have a history of supporting progressive causes such as climate change and refugees. They have also supported the civil uprising which preceded the Syrian Civil War. It helped to smuggle $2 million medical equipment into treacherous areas of Syria during the conflict.Overall the goal of Avaaz is to help anyone in the world to be able to be active in support of their ideologies even if from home with the only access to the outer world being through the Internet.
