Dissecting the Labor Laws
Karl Heideck, a renowned attorney, was recently examining the whole issue of labor laws, employment law, and compliance law for business people operating in Pennsylvania. In his analysis, regulations impact businesses differently depending on the industry in which they operate. In an industry that employs minors, for example, an employer must be keen in adhering to the Child Labor Law.
It’s a requirement by law that no Pennsylvanian employer should pay his employee anything less than the set minimum wage. In a case where the federal minimum wage and the state minimum wage differ, Karl Heideck advised that an employer should settle for the higher minimum. In Pennsylvania, for example, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour while the state minimum wage is $10.15 per hour. In a case such as this, an employer should follow the minimum set by the state.
The Family and Medical Leave Act is a type of regulation that Karl pointed out as important to understand. He explained that every employee in Pennsylvania is entitled to a break from his duties in the event that a close relative is unwell. During the leave period, the employer is under no obligation to pay the employee, but the law deters him from sacking the employee.
Karl Heideck also explained about the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. In his explanation, he noted that the law has been in force for a decade now. Going by the law, no employee should be mistreated or discriminated on the basis of being old.
